The China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) recently found that at the end of 2006, the number of Internet users in China had reached an estimated 137 million. This puts them second only to the United States in number of people online, and represents a penetration rate of 10.5% (compared to roughly 70% in the US).
While the user numbers are impressive, the truly remarkable statistics are the rates at which usage has grown in China. In the last year alone, the number of Internet users has increased by 26 million (23.4% growth rate), Chinese domain names have gone up over 700,000 to 1.8 million (64.4%), and the total number of web pages has increased to 4.47 billion (86.3%).
While some analysts predict that China’s Internet usage could surpass the United States’ in as little as two years, there is no doubt that there will be more people surfing in China than anywhere else on earth in a very short time.
