The number of broadband subscriptions throughout the OECD continued to increase in 2005 on the rise from 136 million in June 2005 to 158 million by the end of the same year.
Broadband rate of growth during the same period was steady at 15% and the average number of subscribers was 13.6 per 100 inhabitants.
The report shows Italy in 19th position just after Germany.
The broadband scenario is expected to rapidly change throughout 2006 and 2007 as prices continue to fall and bandwidth availability increases. Pricing now ranges from just under € 20,00 for a flat 4 Mbit or € 36,00 for a 20 Mbit nominal download, now being launched by major ISPs.
The increase in speed provided by ADSL2 standards encourage users to move to a flat access profile and consume online content and entertainment.
