Chen Hui, founder of China’s leading pornographic website, “Pornographic Summer” was sentenced to life and fined 100,000 yuan (about $12,500). Mr. Chen is only 28 years old. Eight other people involved with the site were sentenced to between 13 months and 10 years for “profitering from pornographic dissemination”. Pornographic Summer membership and that of three sister sites had reached 600,000 at the time of the arrests.
Chinese authorities have been playing a cat and mouse game with Chen Hui as he would often change the website domain names and servers. Last year investigators followed a lead and found that Chen and his group converted a hospital website into a pornographic website and shut them down. Previous convictions regarding pornograpy include a 12 year sentence for selling pornographic goods and 5 years for selling pornographic DVDs and VCDs.
A police source said it was difficult to know the profits made by them because most of the money was spent or saved in foreign bank accounts.
The police found about 200,000 yuan ($25,000) in their Chinese bank accounts.
Commercial space on the website sold for 1,000 to 3,000 yuan (about $125 to $375) per month.
