Mail.ru, the popular Russian mailbox provider, has announced the launch of their new WAP mobile search service today.
This beta service will allow mobile users to retrieve information on Runet WAP sites and to use Mail.ru’s own search engine (WAP-search).
Their search engine has already processed 33 million documents and provides a directory of available WAP sites for users. Access to both services is effected on WAP- protocol, with addresses wap.mail.ru or wap.go.mail.ru.
Our WAP- search will make possible to search for information on separate WAP sites to millions of users of mobile connection, says the Director-General of company Mail.ru Dmitriy Grishin. This is going to be the first of our experiments in the region of search technologies.
Mobile use is very particularly strong here in Russia, so this has been regarded as a good move on the part of Mail.ru. Although they are better known for their on-line email application (similar to Hotmail) Mail.ru’s web portal holds 4th place in the Russian search market with 6.5%. Their organic and contextual advert results have been provided by market leaders Yandex since late last year.
