What is Naver?
Naver is a South Korean online platform that offers a wide range of services including a search engine, news portal, email, online shopping and social networking.
In the screenshot below, you can see various icons displayed below the search bar, which all link to services that Naver offers (with more appearing if you click the three dots at the end).
Naver focuses on the South Korean market only, providing localised content and services that are tailored to the needs and preferences of South Korean users. As you can see in the screenshot above, all the content is written in Korean.
Key features of Naver
1. Comprehensive services
As I mentioned above, Naver offers a wide variety of services. Allowing users to access multiple services within a single platform makes it convenient and efficient for users.
The screenshot below shows just some of the many services that Naver offers. It offers dozens of different services, with new services being launched frequently.
2. User customisation
Naver allows users to customise their experience by personalising their news feed, blog templates, preferences and which services they see on their main screen. This degree of personalisation enhances user satisfaction and engagement.
3. Content diversity
Naver is not just for written or image content; it has its own video and webtoon platforms too, which are expanding quickly. Naver Webtoon (where users can read comics and manga) in particular has gained international recognition.
Social media on Naver
Regarding social networking, the two Naver services that I want to focus on are Naver Blog and Naver Cafe. Both have huge userbases and are widely used for building communities based on interests and sharing opinions. They can be great places to promote your business in South Korea.
1. Naver Blog
Naver Blog is a blogging platform. It allows users to create and manage their own blogs.
Users can choose templates to create unique blog designs to showcase their personal style and reflect their personality. In this sense, Naver Blog is not just a blogging platform, but instead acts more like a mini-website, which differentiates this platform from other social media channels.
Naver Blog has a large userbase and a strong community. Users interact with each other by leaving comments and following other bloggers.
Businesses often use Naver Blog to promote their products and services, share industry insights and connect with their target audience in South Korea.

2. Naver Cafe
Naver Cafe is an online community platform. It allows users to search for, create and participate in various interest-based communities.
Users can create their own cafes, where they can set the topic, customise the design and layout, and create rules and guidelines for the community.
Naver Cafe has a search function, which allows users to search cafes by keywords and browse different categories.
Naver Cafe has a stronger community than Naver Blog, since it is for users who want to connect and engage with others who share similar interests.
Businesses often create Naver Cafes to build their community and engage with their audience in South Korea.
The screenshot below shows an example of a Naver Cafe.
What is new with Naver social media in 2024?
1. The rise (again) of Naver Blog
Naver Blog is seeing a resurgence in popularity, especially amongst younger generations. Users want to consume more meaningful content, and they also want to record things in their daily lives. Naver Blog ticks both these boxes, acting as an online diary, particularly for millennials and Gen Z in South Korea.
So, what does this mean for businesses? My advice would be for businesses to actively use Naver Blog as a PR channel where you can publish high-quality organic content. It would also be a good idea to collaborate with relevant bloggers, in order to boost your brand presence on Naver.

2. New short-form video and streaming features
Naver has recently launched a new service called “Clip” which is a platform for short-form videos, similar to Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts. It has also recently launched a new streaming service called “CHZZK”.
Depending on your type of business, you may want to start incorporating these services into your Naver marketing strategy, using them similarly to TikTok for short-form content. Getting started early could give you an early-mover advantage, before the competition ramps up, giving you more visibility on the Naver platform.

Clip and CHZZK are still quite new so they do not have many advanced functions yet, but basically, they work similarly to TikTok. What is special about Clip, however, is that it can be integrated with other Naver services, such as Naver Blog and Naver Cafe.
In fact, users have already seen new functionality appear in Naver Blog that allows them to browse and insert Clips into their blog posts. Since Naver Blog already has a lot of users, this could really help to launch the popularity of Clip.
Since Naver Blog is an article-based platform that often features long text and images, the addition of short-form video will satisfy additional needs of users.
Another advantage is that if a user comes across somebody’s Clip, that can then lead them to their Naver Blog, since they are all synced together, which opens the door to additional content discovery.
Final thoughts and tips for marketing on Naver in 2024
My advice for brands wanting to do social media marketing on Naver in 2024 would be to embrace Naver Blog, Cafe, Clip and CHZZK. Since Clip and CHZZK are new services, brands that choose to quickly get involved will be more competitive than other brands, with a bigger brand presence than their competitors. And since many brands may already be creating short-form content for the likes of TikTok anyway, they can simply adapt that content for Naver. Just make sure to localise it for the South Korean market.
