Audiweb Publishes Research Data of Online Usage in Italy

Audiweb has published research data profiling the online population in Italy for March 2009.

  • 59.7 % between 11 and 74 years of age interviewed have at least one internet access (home, office, school or other place)
  • Internet is available in 9,653 million Italian households (46.6 % of families)
  • 72 % of connections are broadband with a “flat” profile (unlimited access)
  • Access at home via computer is by far the most privileged type of connection – amongst those interviewed:
    • 88,4 % were university students
    • 64 % in the age group 11 – 17
    • 61.3 % in the age group 18 – 34
    • 19.3 % have access to the internet at work

People in Italy use the internet because:

  • They can find all kind of information (46.1 %)
  • They can simplify procedures by accessing remote sites (26.8 %)
  • Internet can make work and study enjoyable or fun (22.7 %)
  • Internet offers real time updates (22.4 %)
  • It i possible to keep in touch with friends and relatives anywhere in the world (18.5 %)

People do not use the internet in Italy because:

  • They do not know how to use a computer (58.9 %)
  • They are not computer experts (15.8 %)
  • They are not interested (23.8 %)

Occasional users declared they would use the internet more often if:

  • Internet access were cheaper (34.8 %)
  • Internet access via mobile phone were cheaper (13.9%)
  • The speed of connections were greater (13.3 %)
  • If there were less publicity (10.3 %)

The results presented were based on 7.892 interviews.
